This vineyard boasts basalt rocks of every kind: black, red (oxidized), and white (volcanic ash). At 1.88 acres, “Highland Close” is the largest of the Rose and Arrow sites; but despite its size, the soil is quite consistent. The high elevation and extremely rocky soil of this parcel gives the wine a distinctive, energetic nose, followed by a symphony of mineral flavors with crushed red fruit (emblematic of oxidized red basalt). It has a light, velvet texture, and sits gently on the tongue.

"Stonecreek" is the smallest of our vineyard sites at 0.62 acres—a tiny parcel marked by horizontal fractures in the basalt. The vines’ feathery roots work hard to grow between the rock, and can be found snuggled in thin clay deposits between the fractures. Thanks to this struggle, "Stonecreek" is the most structured Pinot Noir of the seven: A sturdy mineral character, draped in a soft cloak of fresh red and black fruit.

Our "Black Walnut" parcel is 0.96 acres composed entirely of red basalt alterite, giving the resulting wine a sweet and round personality. At first glance, the soil in this site nearly fooled us as red top soil, but closer examination revealed 100 percent oxidized volcanic rock—eroded to such a degree that it is just on the cusp of becoming soil. The wine is a cheerful companion, each sip offering a bounty of fresh red berries and cherries.

Similar to "Highland Close," this parcel is a complicated place of black, red, and white basalt with barely any topsoil. Time has worn the ancient rocks into flat stones that wind like a river around the belly of the vineyard’s 1.47 acres—resulting in a Pinot Noir that’s energetic and structured, and full of deeply satisfying, ripe fruit.
