About Us

At the Chapter 24 Vineyards we want to create a culture that is uncommonly interesting, innovative, intelligent, human, irreverent, focused, timely and delicious. A culture about the action of thinking. Thinking about the vineyard, the evolution of grape to wine, and above everything else, the experience of drinking. It is only the act of drinking that fully animates our wine. At their best, our Pinots change the atmosphere around our lives. Emotion, thought and action influenced by the attractive forces generated by a glass of wine.

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair was created in 2000 by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, but the Liger-Belair family’s winemaking roots extend back to 1815 when Louis Liger-Belair, a Napoleonic general, acquired the Château de Vosne and grew the estate significantly, eventually owning over 60 hectares of land in such prestigious vineyards as La Romanée, La Tâche, La Grande Rue, and the Vosne-Romanée 1er Crus Malconsorts, Chaumes, and Reignots. The passage of time and division of the holdings amongst numerous heirs eventually fractured the estate, but two of the original Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s descendants later came together in the 1930’s to buy back La Romanée, Reignots, and Les Chaumes, which had been sold to local vignerons.

Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, five generations removed from General Louis Liger-Belair, created his domaine by reclaiming 1.5 hectares of the family’s vines in 2000 and then a further 1.6 hectares in 2002, including the entirety of the smallest appellation in France, the renowned Grand Cru of La Romanée. Louis-Michel’s philosophy of winemaking is that “95% of the quality of wine lies in the vineyard” and his background in agricultural engineering has helped produce wines that have succeeded in revitalizing this storied family name.

With the success of resurrecting the family estate, Louis-Michel aspired to work with pinot noir outside of France and joined Mark Tarlov to create Chapter 24 Vineyards in 2012 as our consulting winemaker.


Having grown up on a citrus farm in Australia where he helped his family to work the land, farming is in Ryan’s blood. After spending 5 years traveling Australia and Europe Ryan found his passion and graduated with a degree in viticulture from the University of Adelaide in 2008. Ryan moved to the United States where he continued his career in the wine industry. In 2010, he was hired by Mark Tarlov as the Seven Springs Vineyard Manager for Evening Land Vineyards under the instructions of Consultant Dominique Lafon. Ryan biodynamically farmed Seven Springs until reuniting with Mark as the Director of Viticulture for Chapter 24.


Like many Californians, the Sacramento native was unwittingly steeped in the culture of wine from an early age. After attending the University of Pennsylvania, Heather took a job as a server at Lulu restaurant in San Francisco. It was here, negotiating the Provençal wine list, that her interest in wine was piqued.

Next, she accepted a position at Farallon in San Francisco and after two and a half years, moved to the Fifth Floor to work under the direction of Rajat Parr, a disciple of the legendary wine connoisseur, Larry Stone. Both men had a significant role in cultivating Heather’s talent and after two and a half years, felt that she was ready for her own program.

The opportunity soon came. Tom Colicchio invited Heather to direct the beverage program at his Las Vegas venture, Craftsteak. Throughout her three-year tenure, she was responsible for more than $4.5 million in beverage sales and supplemented the 750-bottle list with Craftsteak exclusives—products she brought in from small producers with whom she had already developed relationships in California.

In 2004, she was named one of the year’s best new sommeliers by Wine & Spirits magazine. Offers began pouring in from New York and soon Heather was unpacking her wine key in her new West Village apartment, first to head up the program at Donatella Arpaia and Michael Psilakis’ Dona and then at Charlie Palmer’s Aureole.

Heather created the list and managed the beverage program at eighty one, and when it closed in 2010, and she took a hiatus from restaurants after 15 years to learn the nuances of distribution and sales with Polaner Selections (representing such brands such as Selosse, Prevost, Giacomo Conterno, Fontaine Gagnard, and Arnot Roberts). She started with Chapter 24 on July 15, 2013 for the next adventure.


Mark Tarlov founded Chapter 24 Vineyards in 2012 after leaving Evening Land Vineyards, the winery he founded in 2006. Collaborating with consulting winemaker Louis Michel Liger-Belair and Viticultural Director Ryan Hannaford, Chapter 24 produces wines from organically grown fruit across 48 vineyard sites in the 5 Willamette Valley viticultural areas.

Named, in its first vintage the 2012, as one of the Wine & Spirits Magazine’s Wineries of the Year, Chapter 24 produces 5 distinct cuvees for separate 3 brands. Maison L’Envoyé's Two Messengers and Attaché, Chapter 24’s Fire and Flood and the highest rated Pinot Noir in America for 2014, The Last Chapter.

Prior to starting in the wine business, Mark produced and/or directed over 20 feature films, including “Christine” based on the novel by Stephen King (his first film), “Copy Cat” starring Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter and Harry Connick Jr. and “Simply Irresistible” with Sarah Michelle Gellar. He is currently preparing a new film, "Lost in the Stars", which will start production in the Fall of 2016 and working on a television series to star his Daughter Molly.

Before striking off on his own in the film business Mark worked in business affairs at Warner Bros. in New York and Los Angeles. Mark had come to Warner Bros. directly from a 3 year term as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice. Prior to attending Columbia University Law School, he worked for two years in the office of Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court Warren Burger writing speeches and articles.
