The rocky soil in Chehalem has a distinctive moderately fractured basalt composition and contains three types of basalt; black, red, and white. The white basalt takes its color from volcanic ash while the red shows its pronounced color from oxidation. In addition, the basalts are shot through with weathered black basalt pebbles.
